Although it's hidden from view, it plays an important role in how well your mailer box protects your products during shipping.

What's the Difference Between E-Flute, C-Flute, and B-Flute?

E-Flute, B-Flute, and C-Flute mainly differ in their thickness, which affects a mailer box's strength, cushioning, print quality, and overall appearance. E-Flute is the thinnest, so it works well for premium branding and lightweight products. B-Flute offers a balance of durability and presentation, making it a popular choice for e-commerce packaging. C-Flute is thicker and is commonly used for shipping cartons that require additional cushioning and protection

  • B-Flute (approximately 1/8"): Provides a balance of strength, cushioning, durability, and presentation for e-commerce packaging
  • C-Flute (approximately 3/16"): Provides additional cushioning and is commonly used for shipping cartons and heavier or fragile products.

E-Flute: Best for Premium Branding

E-Flute is approximately 1/16" thick and provides a thin profile that supports both presentation and performance. Its thinner profile creates crisp folds and a smooth surface for printed branding, sharp colors, and vibrant graphics. It is commonly used for subscription boxes, beauty packaging, and other e-commerce applications that require a polished unboxing experience.

Even though the E-flute box is thinner, it can still protect many lightweight products, such as:

  • Cosmetics and skincare products
  • Clothing and fashion accessories
  • Jewelry
  • Stationery
  • Subscription box items
  • Small electronics and accessories
  • Other retail products that don't need heavy-duty cushioning.

Because E-Flute has less cushioning than thicker corrugated materials, it is generally used for smaller boxes and lightweight products that do not require heavy-duty protection.


B-Flute: The Best Balance of Strength and Appearance

B-Flute is approximately 1/8" thick and provides greater cushioning and strength than E-Flute.

B-Flute is about twice as thick as E-Flute, so it gives better protection against crushing, bumps, and punctures during shipping. It also retains a smooth surface for printing, which works well for custom branding.

For many e-commerce businesses, B-Flute offers the best balance between durability and presentation.

B-Flute is often used for products that need more protection during shipping, including:

Its additional thickness makes B-Flute suitable for larger boxes and products that require more cushioning and structural support during shipping.

C-Flute: Made for Protection

C-Flute is approximately 3/16" thick and has larger flutes that provide additional cushioning and stacking strength. It uses the same basic single-wall construction as E-Flute and B-Flute, with one fluted layer between two flat liners.

Its larger flutes help absorb impacts, making C-Flute suitable for shipping cartons used for heavier or fragile products. It also provides the strength needed when boxes are stacked in warehouses or during shipping.

Because C-Flute is thicker, it may not provide the same sleek profile, crisp folds, or smooth printing surface as thinner flute materials. For this reason, it is used more often for shipping cartons than for branded e-commerce mailers.


Which Flute Does Packola Offer?
