Custom Mailer Boxes

FAQs About Mailer Boxes & Mailing Boxes

This FAQ covers everything you need to know about Packola Mailer Boxes, from materials and sizing to ordering, artwork, and shipping. Whether you’re new to custom packaging or upgrading your current setup, you’ll find clear, practical answers below.

Product Information

What are Mailer Boxes?

Mailer Boxes are durable corrugated boxes designed with built-in locking tabs and dust flaps, so they assemble securely without needing glue or staples. The technical structure is called a Roll End Tuck Front (RETF).

Mailer Boxes are ideal for e-commerce because they protect your products, create a polished unboxing experience, and can safely ship through the mail on their own.

What is the difference between Shipping Boxes and Mailer Boxes?

Mailer Boxes

  • Usually smaller and more visually branded
  • Perfect for curated sets, kits, and individual items
  • Lock securely using built-in flaps
  • Do not require adhesives for assembly

Shipping Boxes

  • Larger, more rugged, and suited for bulkier items
  • Require packaging tape for closure
  • Standard RSC (Regular Slotted Container) structure

Many brands use both. Mailer Boxes handle the presentation and customer experience. Shipping Boxes handle bulk distribution, heavier shipments, and sometimes even storage.

What are Mailer Boxes made of?

Packola Mailer Boxes are made from durable E Flute or B Flute corrugated board.

  • E Flute: Thinner, lightweight, excellent print quality
  • B Flute: Thicker, heavier, ideal for larger or bulkier contents

How much weight can Packola’s corrugated boxes support?

Our corrugated boxes have a 32 ECT rating, meaning they can withstand approximately 32 pounds of pressure applied from above when stacked.

Typical weight support ranges per box:

  • E Flute: ~20 to 25 lbs
  • B Flute: ~30 to 40 lbs

Actual performance depends on packing method, product type, box size, and shipping conditions.

Are Mailer Boxes easy to assemble?

Yes. Every box ships flat and arrives pre-scored for quick folding.

Here’s how to assemble one:

  1. Fold all pre-scored lines inward, including the double scores on each side.
  2. Fold up the front and back panels. Tuck in the hidden flaps.
  3. Bring up the side walls, then fold and snap them into the interior lock positions.
  4. Fold the dust flaps inward, to the inside of the box.
  5. Close the lid and slide the locking tabs securely into the side slots.

Your Mailer Box is ready to use.

How do I ship Mailer Boxes?

Mailer Boxes qualify as Ships In Own Container (SIOC), meaning they can be mailed without an outer box.

For best results and protection against tampering, we strongly recommend sealing your Mailer Box with packaging tape. This is best practice for any parcel shipment.

You can also add a custom-branded sticker to secure the closure and enhance your unboxing experience.

Shipping Label placement tip: Apply the shipping label to the bottom panel of your Mailer Box to avoid covering artwork on the lid.

Do Mailer Boxes require tape?

  • For shipping: Tape is recommended for secure transit.
  • For in-store packaging or gift sets: Tape is optional.

Can I print on the inside and outside of my Mailer Box?

Yes. You can choose to print on the outside, inside, both sides, or leave the box blank. Under “Printed Sides,” the available options are:

  • Outside Only
  • Inside Only
  • Both Sides
  • Blank

To print on the inside and outside of your Mailer Box, select Both Sides in the “Print Sides” menu.

Yes. Order a one-piece sample with your custom artwork and preferred dimensions.

What are the standard sizes for Mailer Boxes?

Popular interior sizes (L x W x D):

  • 10” x 8” x 4”
  • 12” x 10” x 4”
  • 9” x 6” x 2”

Custom sizes are available within:

  • Length: 3” - 25”
  • Width: 2” - 25”
  • Depth: 1” - 15”

How do I know what box size I need?

Packola uses interior dimensions to ensure accurate product fit.

Follow these steps:

  1. Lay out the items you plan to pack.
  2. Arrange them as they will sit inside the box.
  3. Include protective materials like crinkle paper or bubble wrap.
  4. Measure L, W, and D in inches:
    • Length: Left to right
    • Width: Front to back
    • Depth/Height: Base to top of the tallest item

We recommend adding a 0.125” to 0.25” buffer to each dimension for easy packing.

Artwork & Files

How can I create my design?

After configuring your box on the product page by choosing the size, material, quantity, and printed sides, you will be prompted to add your artwork. You can do this in one of two ways:

  1. Use the online 3D Design Studio
Select “Design Online” to open the 3D Design Studio, where you can add logos, text, colors, and graphics directly to your box and preview it in real time.
  2. Upload your own artwork
If you already have a finished design, select “Order Now and Receive a Dieline Template” and make your purchase. We will email you the custom dieline for your Mailer Box with instructions on how to submit your artwork.

If you have questions about your file, email our experts at artwork@packola.com for a quick review.

How can I get a dieline template?

Select the “Order now & receive a dieline template” option on the product page. Once your order is placed, we will email you the dieline file for your exact box size.

If you need a dieline before placing an order, contact our customer service team at info@packola.com or 1 855 PACKOLA.

Production & Printing

Why is there a QR code printed on my custom box?

This code helps track your order through production for accuracy and speed. It is printed on a hidden area that will not affect your final design.
